How To Quit Smoking Without Taking A Life

If you are anything like me, it isn’t so much the anguish or anticipation of having to live without nicotine that is keeping you from quitting smoking, it is the anxiety over removing something from your life that you really do enjoy. Non-smokers will never understand how much a part of your life smoking really is and how scary it can be to think of living the rest of your life without a crutch, of sorts, that has been with you for such a long time.

There is that morning cigarette that you enjoy with a cup of coffee. The thought of greeting each morning without that special combination may frighten the heck out of you. You may even be telling yourself that you can quit as long as you can still enjoy that first cigarette of the day with your cup of coffee. They can take everything else away but not that first cigarette.

Then there’s the cigarette that you enjoy after a good meal. This ranks second on your list of times when a cigarette simply hits the spot and tops off a wonderful experience. After a meal you naturally just want to enjoy that cigarette. Almost without a though you step outside and light up…belly full after enjoying some time with friends or family…almost as if it was a necessary part of digestion. What will meals be like without that cigarette? Will that desire always be there after you eat and what will take the place of that?

Then there are the cigarettes that you smoke while driving. Stuck in traffic? Light up a smoke to chill you out so you resist the urge to scream at every moron who has to come to almost a complete stop to see someone changing a flat tire? Driving late at night? That cigarette would keep you company and your hands occupied while the nicotine gave you that little bit of energy to keep you awake for another fifteen minutes or so. What are you even going to do with your hands while driving to keep yourself from going nuts?

What about that cigarette at the end of the day? The one that you may enjoy alone as you go over the day in your mind…remembering things that you need to take care of tomorrow. Making a mental list in your head of what needs to be done or solving problems before hitting the hay and ending the day. It would almost seem unnatural to just go to bed without that final cigarette of the day. Will you be able to fall asleep without it? Will your body wonder what the heck is going on and keep you up until you do go have that final smoke of the day?

Then there are the necessary cigarettes that you smoke throughout the day. For me, that was when so many of the issues that confronted me during the day were solved. I would step outside for five minutes and have a cigarette and in the quiet of that break the resolution would come into my mind almost as if by magic. The thought of being confined to your workspace for hours on end without a cigarette break just seems unfathomable. What if someone ticks you off? No more cigarette to run to that would distance you from the objectionable employee or boss that you would sorely love to rip a good one.

You might even rationalize that you are a calmer, more easy-going person when you’re smoking. Nobody is going to want to deal with you if you’re not smoking. You might even have used this line to convince your friends and family that they wouldn’t want to be around you if you didn’t smoke. That you would be cross and just a grumpy human being to be around.

The truth is that these are unfounded fears. They are fears all the same but they are not based in reality. There are people who quit smoking every day and never turn back. They do so without anxiety and without losing their job or even missing smoking at all. Yes, you heard me right. They don’t miss it at all. They don’t use pills that can have some very dangerous and life threatening side effects. They don’t gain weight or replace their habit with something more destructive. They do so with a clear conscious and level headed confidence that they will never smoke again.

Even people who had just a small desire to quit smoking were able to do so easily and quite successfully with the help of “Quit Smoking Right Now”.
